Congratulating Seven Women (elect) members and all other elect members of the National Assembly.
The proportion of women’s representation in the Parliament is one of the main reasons for our country’s consistent lower score and ranking in the Global Gender Gap Index and the Gender Inequality Index. During the three rounds of elections, the parliament of Bhutan saw female representation much lower than the global average of 24 percent and regional (Asia) average of 19.5 percent (IPU, Sept, 2018). It was 13.8 percent in 2008 and 8.3 percent in 2013.
The third parliamentary election result (provisional) is a resounding verdict of hope and better prospect for our women and the nation. With today’s result, Bhutan can proudly say that we have one women representation out of seven (15.3 %) members of the parliament.
Therefore, the NCWC would like to extend our sincere “Tashi Delek” to Seven Women (elect) members and all other elect members of the National Assembly.
We would also like to convey our heartfelt thanks to all other candidates for contesting the election and giving us a choice. In particularly we would like to salute our women candidates for coming forward and showing confidence to the nation despite many hurdles in doing so. There are many who are inspired by your contribution. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
