International Day of the Girl Child (IDGC)
The International Day of the Girl Child (IDGC) which falls on 11 October is an outcome of resolution 66/170 adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 19, 2011, in recognition girls’ rights and unique challenges girls face around the world.
Bhutan joined the international community to observe the IDGC in 2013 on the theme “Innovating for Girls’ Educationâ€, with the National Commission for Women and Children (NCWC) collaborated with Babesa Primary School, Ministry of Education. In 2014, the NCWC along with the Chairperson of the NCWC joined Damphu Higher Secondary School staff and students to observe the IDGC, which focused on “Empowering Adolescent Girls: Ending the Cycle of Violenceâ€.
This year, with the theme for the IDGC set as “The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030†the program is to be observed at Khasadrapchu Middle Secondary School on October 11, 2015, for which Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuck will grace the occassion as the Chief Guest.
